Book 3 for #gratefulforbooks2019 : Jane Eyre 📚 📚 I fell in LOVE with Jane Eyre when I read it in high school. An angsty protagonist, her brooding lover, gothic mood, the overbearing morality of society, the freedom of independent thought, AND a crazy lady in the attic?! I mean, what’s a teen not to love? 📚 📚 What I love most about Jane is how she’s been weaved into my friendships. This was one of my first experiences with reading a book for fun, talking to a friend about it, and having actual conversations about books. It continues to be a conversation piece for new friendships. The conversation usually goes like this: “MAN, I loooooved Jane Eyre as a kid!” “Me too!” “But, you know, reading it now... maybe she shouldn’t have gone back to Rochester...” “Definitely not.” “But... swoon.” “Yeah...” 📚 📚 This month, I’m sharing the books I’m thankful for! Book 2 of #gratefulforbooks2019 : The Hunger Games. 🏹 🏹 Say what you will about YA fiction and The Hunger Games, but this series is what made me love reading as an adult. I became an English major because I loved reading and writing. I was thrilled to pursue advanced studies in literature. But it made reading feel like a task. 🏹 🏹 After an honors thesis that I wasn’t too passionate about, and having to read 2-3 books every week for grad school, I was worn out. Every time I picked up a book, I felt the pressure to pick it apart, analyze it, and write a paper on it. After I graduated, I didn’t read for myself for two years. Then my friend suggested Hunger Games. She said she hadn’t read a page-turner like it since Harry Potter. That was enough for me. I got sucked into Panem and Katniss’s story. And I rediscovered the joy of reading. 🏹 🏹 Lesson learned: YA can be a gateway drug to reading, and because of that, it is worth it. 🏹 🏹 Swipe for the process video and all my dumb ideas before I got to this one. 🤣
